How to make a Stained Glass Quilt

Cut out all your pieces for your stained glass quilt.

Lay out the pieces on your foundation fabric. Muslin works well for the foundation fabric. Its like building a fabric puzzle. Pin the pieces in place.
I like to baste around the pieces after they are in place so that they don't shift while stitching on the bias tape.

The bias tape I used for this project was 1/4" black. You can buy the regular packaged tape or "Clover" makes an iron on bias that works quite well. Its not a permanent iron on. You will still need to stitch the edges of the tape down.
Stitch down both edges of the tape either by hand or machine.

As you see on the diagram on the left there is an order to how you stitch down the tape. The goal is to be able to cover the raw edges of the tape with other pieces that are layed down after. As you can see in the diagram the only piece that you will have to do a little turn under of the edge of the bias tape is piece 9. On that piece you will need to tuck one end inside the other turning the raw edge in.

I have color coded the different numbers to help aid in placement

Trim off the excess foundation fabric and add your other pieces. As you can see I have added more bias tape around the border pieces.

In stained glass there will be leading any place the glass is a different piece. You will want to quilt on both sides of the bias leading to make the leading stand out.
